Pop of color 2

Hello everyone!

I've been busy this week so I haven't been able to post anything. I'm working on that chair, slowly, but I'm working on it. Mr. Monster has been busy painting the house so he hasn't been able to help me with the pictures. To do something in the meantime, I've been taking some pictures of my dolls. If you read my Pop of color post, you know that I've taken some color samples from the shop where I work to use them as backgrounds for doll photography. I've returned a few of the ones I had and borrowed a few more. I must confess that when I'm not busy in my job, I can't stop thinking "Which colour am I going to grab next?".

I didn't plan to do another photoshoot post, I wanted to do a craft post, but I'm getting a little bit frustrated that I can't get things done and I don't want to be absent from the blog such a long time. Also, I like to experiment with photography and colors. If you have been following me on Instagram, you probably have already seen some of the pictures, but here we go.

In my last post, I used a dark turquoise color as a background, that I didn't pay much attention to. Then, I started wondering how it will look on some Monster High dolls. It really matches Nefera's color scheme, but she doesn't really pop out from this background.

It does match Vandala aswell, but her hat is too big, so it was tricky to picture her.

I chose a chocolate brown color because I thought it will look great. Its a neutral color, which is good, but I don't like it as much as other colors. I like how it looks againts Lea's pink top.

I also had a much lighter version of the turquoise color, which is actually the shade that I picked for my bedroom. It's a nice color, but it looks to light against the dolls.

And there's no such a big difference with a darker tone.

I wanted to pick a bright green but the greens in this color chart are a little bit dull. The bamboo green doesn't really flatter the dolls.

It looks specially dull against very colorfull dolls like Posea. It's the same background, but it looks really different doesn't it?

The red from the previous post is still one of my favourites. I think that there's no doll that looks bad against it.

The dark purple background matches Raven Queen's color scheme, but it doesn't really pop out.

I have another dark purple, more like a maroon, that seems to stand out more.

I took a darker tone of the lavender that looked too light in the previous photo session, and it looks  better.

It looks quite neutral. I wonder how a darker tone will look....

I'd love to find a bright pink and orange for my pictures, but this is the best I could find. It's nice, but not exactly what I was looking for.

So, this is more or less what I've been doing lately, just taking pictures of dolls. I hope I can finish the chair soon and I'll be able to show you.  I'm also considering getting something new as a backdrop for doll photography. I've seen a sparkle paperboard that could be really fun to use.

What do you use as backdrops for your pictures?

  1. Lovely photos! I love your variety of dolls. I really like the purple/gray background. For my reviews, I usually use a medium gray color as it's nice and neutral. :)

    1. Thank you Farrah Lily! I want to find a nice gray, but I haven't found the perfect one. The colors look so different on the camera!

  2. Actually, my favorite is Raven Queen's because even though the color doesn't pop, it so dark and matching that it really makes the doll herself pop out.

I like to use doll play sets as backgrounds, or, if I have time to make them, dioramas. They don't have to be fancy dioramas either. Some scrapbook paper, a few pieces of furniture or some props and I'm good.

    1. I see your point, but when I saw the photos, the color blended with Raven's hair and I didn't relly like it. However, now I like it more than before. That color really matches the Evil Queen right?

I'd love to find a cheap Barbie playset and repaint it to look more realistic rather than an overdose of pink. I also have a couple of dioramas in mind, but I don't have much time to work on them. We'll see.

      Thanks for your comment!

  3. I haven't tried playing around with different colored backgrounds too much in my photography. I'm trying to carve out more space so I have more room to change things around.

Right now, I just use scrapbook paper for my doll backgrounds. It is problematic because it's not as tall as most of my dolls, so I do need to find something else.

    Have fun with your pictures!

    1. Hello Barb! My backgrounds are smaller than the dolls, so that's why you can only see the dolls from their waists to their heads more or less. My color sheets are A4 size, they're not good for full body shots, but for head shots they're ok.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  4. I love your backdrop tests! If there's no purpose (like a dedicated post), I photograph mine on their shelf or sometimes I move them where there's better lighting (if I'm not lazy and they have a stand). I'm really enjoying my purple bedroom for doll photos, I've had it painted for a while but only recently I got a desk there and some furniture to keep the cat busy while I shoot comfortably. Your bedroom colour doesn't look too bad in my opinion, the advantage is that you can take full body pictures against it. You will get different results depending on the colour scheme of your subject, like it happened with the green sheet. I say give it another chance :) I like the dark turquoise, the dark lavender and the purple-taupe from this post.

    1. Hello Black Kitty! Thank you, I'm happy that you like them!

My bedroom is not painted yet, I just brought the swatch to show it to my boyfriend, and that gave me the idea. I'm writting down the colors that I've liked and the ones that I haven't, so I can take the swatches again if I need them. With Monster High and Ever After High, I like to match the color to the doll's color scheme, but with Barbie dolls is different. I want to find a bright green and orange for the pictures, probably I'll go to a stationary shop to see if I can find anything that suits me.

  5. Lovely photos and creative poses! Did I say that last time? lol.
I always enjoy seeing your photos on Tumblr too.

Anyway, for taller backgrounds I cover foam-board with scrapbook paper. Yes, the scrapbook paper isn't tall enough, so I create height in the walls by adding wainscoting made of a second scrapbook paper. I also create tall baseboards for height. I usually can't commit to gluing the paper to the foam-board, I like to change things, so I hold it in place with clips or pins.

Another background that works well is draped fabric. Do you wear colorful clothes?

Looking forward to seeing some full length poses!

    1. Hello Annette! Thanks a lot for your lovely compliment.

For full body photos I use a large piece of colored cardstock paper, but I only have one color, navy blue. It's what I use as a background for my doll reviews. I love your pictures and the "dioramas" you set up for them. It's a great idea to hold it with pins, so you can change it very often. I don't really wear colorful clothes, but I could give a try to drapped fabric.

I hope to hear from you soon, Doll Observers feels a little bit lonely without you!
