Doll review: Barbie Looks model 16 (curvy)

This was definitely not the post I was planning to make, but turns out it was the post that I felt like writing. To be fair, I have been very busy with both work and my German classes. On top of that, I've had doctor appointments and other things that have kept me busy, so I haven't had much time to work on anything doll-related, despite how much I wanted to. Since it hasn't been possible to make any sort of craft project, I thought it could be a good idea to do a short doll review, because those are much easier to do, and I have a ton of dolls sitting in their boxes.

Today is finally time to review Barbie Looks #16, which came out ages ago, but I really want to talk about her. Mr. Monster bought her as a gift, but I can't remember if it was for my birthday or for Christmas. Anyway, she's been sitting in her box for way too long.

This doll came out with the third wave of Barbie Looks. Contrasting with the first two waves that had more muted color schemes, this wave was full of color, and this doll was no exception. As you can see, the box has the same design as the previous two waves, but the outside is pink and blue, instead of white with gray letters.

Out of this wave, I was only interested in her and the guy with the beard, but he was impossible to find at a reasonable price. The others are fine, but wouldn't pay full price for them.

Here she is out of the box. She refused to cooperate and stand for a full body shot, so she's leaning against the background.

Her face is stunning. She uses the Andra sculpt, which was one of the new face molds they introduced in this line, and, so far, I think it's my favorite. Her eye makeup is beautiful, and I absolutely love the intense blue in her lower lash line. The lip color they've chosen works well with her makeup.

One of the things I liked most about her was her hair. She has this beautiful curl pattern, which gets flatter at the roots. It's fairly similar to my actual hair, except that my curls have a larger pattern and that I'm a brunette. It looks beautiful from the front.

Her hair on the back is a different story. It looks, quite frankly, like a rat's nest. I know it's something that can be fixed, and I know the theory of how to do it. But, you know, I'm not the greatest when it comes to doll hair, and I would like to keep it as close to the original curl pattern as possible.

My biggest disappointment are the clothes. She's wearing what I thought was a teal top and lavender shorts, which is a color combo that I actually like, even if it's a bit "Little Mermaid". I hadn't read any reviews of this doll, and apparently I hadn't been paying attention to the photos, because I didn't realize that this is actually a one piece romper, which totally defeats my plans of using the pieces separately.

To finish her outfit, she's wearing these pink wedges, which are kind of cute. At least I like them more than the silver ankle boots from Model #2.

Honestly, I'm quite happy with this doll. She has a stunning face and is easy to photograph. The curly hair gives her a lot of personality and movement to the photos. The fact that she uses the curvy body, which is my favorite, is a plus.

There is a 4th wave of these dolls already out on the market, and I believe they've gone up in price. To be fair, there's just one doll from that wave I would pay full price for, and that's the redhead that, coincidentaly, also uses the Andra sculpt. Is Andra becoming my favorite sculpt? Those of you who have been here for a long time might remember when I started collecting Barbies and every other Barbie that I liked used the Dreamhouse Skipper sculpt (Victoria and Chloe are two good examples of this). I don't know, maybe Andra could take that spot from now on.

Like I've mentioned before, I'm quite busy right now with both work and my German classes, so I don't really have a lot of time to work on long projects. I have a sewing project started (a basic dress), but right now I don't have the time or energy to finish it. Sewing is not my forte, and I prefer to leave it for a moment when I can focus all of my energy on it.

If I have to make another craft project before the end of the year, it would be another wall. I have an idea for an off-white shiplap wall that could look so cute in Christmas-themed photos. I hope that this year I can finally find a miniature tree that properly fits inside my diorama.

Hope you're all doing well. I haven't seen as much activity on the blogosphere lately, but I hope it's just because real life keeps you busy.  Let me know your thoughts in the comment section down below and I'll be back as soon as possible.

Monster Crafts

Update 31/10/2024: Since some of you might have seen, there are some floodings happening in this area of Spain. We are safe, but some most of the areas affected are roughly 1 hour 30 minutes drive from here. Mr. Monster and I were supposed to go tomorrow on holidays, but we've had to cancel last minute due to how bad it is. So far we're doing fine, but there are so many places that don't have electricity right now. If you're in Spain and able to help in one way or another, please do so.

Thanks to everyone that has reached out to check out on us.

  1. Well, I'm glad that you are okay! This Barbie does photograph well, although I'd be disappointed about the two piece/one piece outfit too. The only thing I can guess is that the two pieces being connected keeps the top from riding up. Are there other dolls out there that use the Andra sculpt?

Real life has indeed been keeping me busy. I wanted to do a Halloween photo shoot, and it just didn't happen. Fortunately, a lot of the things I wanted to photograph will work just as well for autumn in general.

    1. Hi Barb! There are not many dolls with this sculpt yet, but the first I believe was Barbie Looks model 8, the one with short blond hair. I also have her and she's gorgeous.
I am very busy too, with work and then school. But I've noticed in general, a huge drop of activity here on the blogosphere. Xanadu who is usually very active, has been silent for a while. Linda doesn't blog anymore, but she used to read our blogs, and now she seems to be gone. I hope people come back soon, this is way more fun when you have a community of people to share your passion with.

      Thanks for stopping by.

  2. Sorry to be away so long, but I have been busy working on my dolls (there are now 12 of them).
I'm happy to read you are safe and well MC, we have seen the terrible flooding on the screens downunder and I wondered how you fared.
Love this doll's face she's quite stunning. Her body looks more like mine, but I'm envious of her ankles, mine are not so thin. LOL!
Take care and enjoy your dolls when you can.
    Big hugs,
    X

    1. Hi Xanadu! Don't worry, it seems that we'll all been busy. Also, for some reason, this comment got flagged as Spam and I didn't see it. I wonder what happened.
The flooding has been terrible. My dad's family happens to live in one of the affected towns, but luckily the water didn't cause much damage to them. My cousin got his garage flooded and his car won't start, but that's nothing compared to how devastating it has been for other people who have lost their entire homes or even a loved one.
I do agree, that the doll is stunning. Mattel did a great job with her.
I am still quite busy with both work, school and other real life things, but I still try to hop in here from time to time.
      Big hugs to you too!

  3. Thank you for this wonderful sharing.
I didn't know you were close to the floods. I hope you are well now, that you are safe, we don't talk about it on the TV news anymore, so we don't have any news.
