A touch of glitter

Do you ever feel like doing something different with your dolls? Personally, I'd love to try new things when it comes to doll photography, like going outside. Also, I like to try new background colors, as you can see in my Pop of Color posts. So, ever since I saw and Ever After High pic with a glittery background, I wanted to try that myself. Back in September I found some glittery cardstock in a stationary shop and I bought 3, but I never found the time to do a photoshoot. Then, a couple of days ago, I was looking at my Instagram posts and noticed that 90% of my photos have my navy blue background that I use for reviews. So, it's finally time to try something new!

The first background is this black glitter cardboard. I choose black because I wanted a neutral color that would match most of my dolls. Above you  can see how it looks against Victoria.

The first think that I thought when I got this one is that it will totally match Catty Noir's popstar style. And it really does!

Also, McKeyla looks like a rockstar against it!

The second background is a light silver. It looks quite white and I would have prefered something a little bit darker, but this was the only silver tone avaliable. I thought it would be a perfect match for Darling Charming. However, I feel like the doll doesn't really "pop out" and I wasn't very happy with the pictures. This is the one that Mr. Monster and I liked the most:

Since Grace has some silver in her outfit, I though she would look great, but her dark skin tone mutes the background a little bit. However, I think she looks pretty in this shot.

It looks quite darker against Spectra's white skin.

The third and last glitter background is a brown tone. I love the color, but I think this is my least favourite. However, I do think it matches Ginger Breadhouse's sweet theme.

I did not quite find a doll that really pleased me against this background. I wanted to put some DC Super Hero Girls on the shoot, but I didn't feel like they matched the background. Since this is more like an earth tone, I tried it with Poison Ivy. She looks cute, but I'm not really happy with this pics.

I even brought my Coffin Bean Toralei to the photoshoot.

My last try was Chloe, who ended up looking like she was shooting a chocolate commercial.

Even though I'm not very happy with the brown one, the glittery backgrounds are really fun and give a different touch. My favourite one is the black one. There were more colors avaliable, like hot pink, but I wanted something more neutral that would match most of my dolls. I've also seen that there's glittery craft foam, but I think that cardstock works better for a photoshoot.

So what do you guys use for doll photography? Which dolls would you use for each color?

  1. I've never seen glitter as a background. My favourite are the ones where the glitter is farther from the camera and out of focus. I just use my walls :)

    1. I like it when it blurs aswell, but in Catty's picture I like the glitter being noticeable. My walls look very dull as a background. Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Very good idea! I like the black background the best too, but I really do like your Spectra against the silvery one!

    1. Hi Phyllis! I'm glad that you like the idea. I also have some pics of Spectra against the black background, but I think she looked better in the silver one.

  3. I like the Darling Charming photo the most. It looks like she's emerging from a silver mist.

    1. Hi Muff! Thanks I'm glad you like it. That's the pic of her I liked the most, but I didn't see the whole emerging thing.

  4. Hi M-C. It's always great to try new things. I can certainly understand the attraction to glitter paper. I like very much what you are trying to do with it. If I could make one suggestion....try playing around with the lighting.. particularly on the background. Something like a spotlight to bring up lots of contrast would be ideal and would give it an even greater "stage" effect than what you've done already. Otherwise great post. I don't collect Monster Highs but thanks to you, I have a greater appreciation for them!

    1. Hi April! I love the spotlight idea, I will definitely try it next time! I'm not the best photographer and I don't even have anything close to a professional set up, but I love to learn from other people and try to improve. Thanks, I'm glad that you enjoy MH dolls from my photos.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment.

  5. I like Catty Noir's picture the best. The Spectra pic is interesting though; the way the light hits the glitter paper, it almost looks like the picture was taken from above her head, at least to me. I also think it makes her look like an alien more than a ghost.

    1. Spectra is incredibly hard to photograph for me! Her white skin bounces the light and it almost dissappears. It's a pitty, because she's one of my favourite MH dolls, specially this version. I do se the alieny thing, maybe heavier lightning would have made her more ghostly.
